Summer is coming. The sun is out, the birds are singing and (hopefully) on the 21st of June restrictions are lifting more. It might have been a while since you’ve hosted a gathering. So, before you jump back into a social Summer, we’ve got some tips and tricks for keeping the place spick and span before the guests arrive.
Dusting Ceiling Fans and Light Fittings
The last thing you want is to turn on a ceiling fan and dust to rain down on your guests. Before you begin circulating the cool air, let’s remove the dust and debris. Take an old pillowcase, spray the inside with some multi-purpose cleaner, and slide it over the blades. As you wipe them down, all of the dirt will get trapped in the pillowcase, as opposed to falling on the floor. Do the same for your light fittings and fixtures so everything is clean across the board… well, ceiling.
Sweep the Deck
If the sun is out of course you want to be outside, but how is your decking or patio? Is there any dirt on it? Have spiders made an unused gazebo their home!? Be sure to keep some inexpensive brooms and dustpans on hand so that you can make a clean sweep. Do a little a day and keep creepy crawlies away.
To really take care of a patio it is recommended that you use a pressure washer so that it gets a thorough cleaning. For hard to remove marks and stains, douse them with some white vinegar and scrub with a stiff brush.
When dealing with mould hidden in cracks, you want to first use a scraper to loosen and remove any large chunks. Next, apply vinegar to the cracks to kill off the remaining spores and help prevent new mould from growing
Kitchen Cabinets
When you’re making food in the kitchen it can get messy and without a doubt, you’ll need something from your cupboards and draws and get whatever’s on your hands all over the doors and handles. Don’t worry, dip a cloth in some soap and warm water, wring it out, and wipe it over the surfaces. Pay extra attention to the areas around the handles where smaller spaces could be missed. Dry off with a clean cloth and you’re good to go.
Revitalise the Patio Furniture
Let’s give the patio furniture a new lease of life. Begin by rinsing off with a hose pipe (preferably fitted with a spray nozzle). Gently scrub with a cloth and cleaning product designed for the material. If you are unsure of what to use and are worried about damaging the furniture, a solution of washing-up liquid and warm water should do the trick. Rinse off again with the hose, let everything air dry, and your patio furniture will be refreshed.
Get Ready for Grass Stains
Whether you’re kneeling down to garden, or the kids are skidding on their knees enjoying the sunshine as they should be, grass stains are in this season whether you like it or not. The chlorophyll in grass and plants makes these stains particularly hard to get rid of if left to set. As soon as possible it’s important to treat the stains with a mixture of warm water and either white vinegar or a pre-wash stain remover, such as Cillit Bang powder. Let this sit for 5 minutes before machine washing to clear away the rest of the stain.
Bye-Bye Bad Smells
The kitchen is a busy place. A lot goes on, and this creates a lot of odours. Mix this with the summer heat and everything is amplified, and the heart of your home where you want to serve drinks on a hot day, turns into a smelly situation. Don’t worry, we’ve got some tips to help you say bye-bye to the bad smells. Soak your sponges and cloths in a solution of bleach and water for 5 minutes and rinse them thoroughly afterwards. This will keep them clean and germ-free. Pour some white vinegar down your drains to get rid of unwanted scents. When you take your bins out, give them a quick clean with a mild solution of bleach and water. Finally spray some nice air freshener around before your guests arrive to add to the clean and welcoming atmosphere.
Bye-bye dirt, dust, bad smells. No need to worry about entertaining this season. Let’s make it a Summer to remember.
